Songs of the Week: February 1, 2019 edition

“Kind of Funny” by Small Forward

Independently released

Small Forward‘s Affections, released in 2017, is one of the strongest EPs in recent years. I hear a little bit of that magic in the Los Angeles quartet’s latest single “Kind of Funny.” It sure seems like a new Small Forward album is on the way (considering the similar artwork for this track and December single “Tearjerker,”), but nothing’s yet been announced. Stay tuned, I guess.

“Monkey Jaw” by wych elm

Post Mortem Records

wych elm caught my attention with their new split release “monkey jaw/help me,” featuring songs from the Bristol-based rock outfit forthcoming debut EP, Rat Blanket. It comes out March 22. “Monkey Jaw” is moody indie punk at its finest.

“Run” by Dude York

Hardly Art

Dude York, my favorite living Seattle rock trio, just put out a killer four-track EP called Happy in the Meantime — which leads with “Run,” another top-notch stomper where bassist Claire England is front-and-center.
