Oh, to be a young Torontonian these days. The Maple Leafs are on the brink of a dynasty (sigh) and the local music scene is on fire, bursting at the seams with top-notch independent artists like Worst Gift — the post-punk threesome behind today’s thunderous featured track, “What’s Another 40 Bucks Between Friends.”

It’s from Worst Gift’s forthcoming debut LP World’s Worst, described by the band as an ode to “societal collapse, personal failure and meditations on trying to be good.” The third is the central theme of “What’s Another 40 Bucks Between Friends.” Bandmember Sooz explained our Song of the Day in a press statement:

“It’s about feeling like you have the capacity to be good and that you are inherently, and not knowing when you started feeling otherwise. Recognizing where you went wrong, and not being able to feel it when you’re doing the right thing finally due to negative self-talk.”

World’s Worst is scheduled for a September 22 release via Art of the Uncarved Block. Listen to “What’s Another 40 Bucks Between Friends,” its lead single, below. And turn it up really loud.
