It was a surprise — albeit a pleasant one — when Courtney Barnett announced the follow-up to her internationally-acclaimed debut LP Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit would be a collaboration with fellow indie superstar Kurt Vile.
It’s an unconventional move, but Barnett is not exactly a conventional artist. And in Vile (whose most recent solo release was 2015’s b’lieve i’m goin down), I think she has a kindred spirit — another fantastic, wry songwriter typically enthralled with the mundane.
“Over Everything,” from the forthcoming album Lotta Sea Lice (October 13), puts the duo’s palpable creative chemistry on full display — with Barnett and Vile alternating stream-of-consciousness vocal duties in their respective trademark deadpan singing styles, all over meandering guitar riffs.
Per Rolling Stone, Barnett and Vile currently are working on their next solo LPs — though no release dates have been announced so far. The two also will embark on a month-long joint tour in October.
