During a stretch in college, I would start every Sunday morning listening to The Velvet Underground & Nico. In that spirit, the Song of the Day is a Velvet-y track from English art rockers alt-J (stylized as ∆).
Four of the eight songs on this band’s latest album, Relaxer, were released as singles, and somehow* “Hit Me Like That Snare” wasn’t one of them. It has a glorious garage sound, with a loose mood and these vivid, grimy lyrics in the key of hedonism.
* It might have something to do with the hypnotic, boss-ass closing chorus: “fuck you/I’ll do/what I want to do,” or maybe the reference to a “floor full of happy wizards scissoring” among other bizarre imagery.
